Meet the Educator

Hi, I’m Theresa Underwood—a passionate literacy educator dedicated to helping students become confident, capable readers. My journey into education began with a simple curiosity about how children learn, which quickly grew into a lifelong calling.

My Background

I started as a stay-at-home mom, volunteering in my children’s classrooms. That experience inspired me to become a teaching assistant in special education, where I discovered a deep passion for supporting diverse learners. After earning my degree in Psychology with a minor in Teaching, I spent ten years teaching reading and writing before stepping into a specialized role focused on dyslexia intervention.

My Current Role

I currently serve as the Dyslexia Instructor for grades K–6 in Arlington ISD, where I provide structured, research-based intervention. I am trained in both the Multisensory Teaching Approach (MTA) and the Shelton Academic Language Approach (SALA)—programs that empower students with dyslexia to access language through explicit, systematic instruction.

Continuing My Growth

I’m completing my Master’s in Literacy Education at Texas Woman’s University and pursuing CALP certification (Certified Academic Language Practitioner). I believe in the power of lifelong learning and am committed to staying at the forefront of evidence-based literacy practices.

My Why

Every child deserves the tools and support to unlock the power of reading. My mission is to continue working with elementary students, advocate for literacy equity, and help shape classrooms where all learners feel seen, supported, and empowered.
